1857-S Twenty Dollar, Broken A, AU53
Likely Not an
S.S. Central America Coin

1857-S $20 AU53 NGC. Broken A in STATES. Two factors, at least, lead us to think this coin was likely not aboard the ill-fated S.S. Central America when it sank in a hurricane in 1857. First, this piece is the broken A reverse die -- one of the reverse dies known and recovered aboard the ship, although perhaps not in quite as advanced a die state as those pieces. Secondly, the AU53 grade and the buildup of detritus around the device edges is an atypical appearance for the Central America coins. This yellow-gold example shows considerable luster remaining on each side, and marks are minimal.(Registry values: N1793)
