Near-Gem 1854 Type Two Gold Dollar
Richly Toned and Deeply Frosted

1854 G$1 Type Two MS64 PCGS Secure. Although the mintages are virtually the same -- somewhat more than three-quarters of a million pieces each -- the 1854 Type Two gold dollar is somewhat more available than the 1855 Type Two. The second edition (2011) of Bowers' Guide Book on the gold dollar series estimates that 2,500 to 3,000 of the 1854 survive in all Mint State grades, but he provides this caution:

"Most pieces, including those classified as gems, are lightly struck on one or both of the central date digits on the reverse. Grading is highly subjective, and one person's 'About Uncirculated' is sometimes another's 'Mint State.' In terms of sharply struck coins, on excellent planchets, and with 'Buy me!' eye appeal, you can probably divide the population reports by 5 or 10."

Bowers goes on however, to note the conditional rarity of the issue. This is definitely one of the coins that has "Buy me!" eye appeal. The mint luster is thick and frosted and each side displays rich, deep orange-gold color. The centers are atypically complete for this notoriously weak issue. The usually seen clash marks are visible in the fields, but the only other interruption in the surfaces is a checked-shaped mark in the right obverse field.(Registry values: N7079)
