Description
221-Piece Hoard of Circulated 1883 Hawaii Quarters
A Hoard of Uncertified, Circulated 1883 25C Hawaii Quarters. The pieces grade between Fine and MS62. The typical example is a cleaned XF, and many pieces are harshly cleaned, but there are also a number of lustrous and attractive pieces. The 1883 Hawaii quarter or hapaha was struck at the Philadelphia Mint between 1883 and 1884. Although it is the most common Hawaiian denomination in high grades, only 500,000 pieces were struck, and it constitutes a single-year type. Breen states that the 1883-dated issues were recalled by banks after the former kingdom became a U.S. territory, and 257,400 pieces were eventually melted by the U.S. Mint. A significant accumulation, as provided by the present lot, represents years of dedicated effort.Auction Info
