Description
1923-S Nickel, Well-Defined MS66
None Certified Finer
1923-S 5C MS66 NGC. The 1923-S is another premier strike
rarity from this decade, even though 6.1 million pieces were
struck. Apparently dies were overused and the results of extended
die wear can be most obviously seen within the recesses of the
design. On this piece there is some evidence of this die wear, but
it certainly is not objectionable. Most importantly, it has not
affected the strength of strike on either side. The high points of
the design are well-defined, but not entirely brought up, lacking
only complete details on the bison's head. Most of each side is
enveloped in lovely reddish patina with varying degrees of
iridescence around the margins. Identifiable by a small cluster of
spots just below the Indian's chin. Examples in MS66 are
infrequently offered, the high point being in 2008 when three
pieces were offered at public auction (the results ranging from
$25,000 to $40,000). Census: 6 in 66, 0 finer (11/11).From The Teton Ranch Collection.(Registry values: N7079)
