Description

1865 Three Dollar, MS64
The Bass Specimen

1865 $3 MS64 PCGS. Ex: HW Bass Jr Coll. A significantly reflective near-Gem example of the 1865 three dollar, this status not entirely surprising for an issue of just 1,140 business strikes. Color is largely light yellow with shadings toward apricot. All-around detail is solid, though the knot of the wreath is a trifle weak, and the all-around visual appeal is excellent, as expected of a coin that met with Harry W. Bass, Jr.'s approval. Only a few shallow abrasions preclude Gem status. As might be expected for a Civil War-era issue with such a low mintage, at the near-Gem level the 1865 three dollar is an important condition rarity. Population: 5 in 64, 2 finer (11/13).
Ex: John N. Rowe, III; Harry W. Bass, Jr. (purchased 9/1966); Bass II (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 679.(Registry values: N7079)
