Description

1890 Five Dollar, PR64 Deep Cameo
Rare and Overlooked Date
Only 88 Proofs Struck

1890 $5 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS. The 1890 proof half eagle is an issue whose rarity is overlooked, most likely because it is offered so infrequently. The last Deep / Ultra Cameo we offered at public auction was in July, 2003. In fact, we only have records of five appearances at auction over the past 20 years: three in 2003, one in 2008, and one in 2011. Only 88 proofs were struck, and of that number it is reliably estimated that only 20 to 25 individual coins still exist. This is a lovely coin, one that appears much finer than the stated grade. The fields are deeply mirrored and show the usual orange-peel effect on each side. The devices are fully struck and covered with thick mint frost. By way of identification, there is a light alloy spot in the left obverse field just out from the chin of Liberty, and another, even fainter one on the reverse just above the neck of the eagle. Population: 1 in 64 Deep Cameo, 1 finer (11/13).(Registry values: P3)
