Description

1849 N-18 Cent, PR65 Red and Brown
Proof-Only Variety
From the Allenburger Collection

1849 1C PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. N-18, Low R.6. About two dozen 1849 N-18 large cents are known, all in proof, along with eight or nine proof examples of N-30. Just over a dozen of the known proofs are certified, and this specimen is tied for the finest of those pieces. The reverse die was used for seven proof-only varieties spanning six years from 1844 through 1849. Like all 1849 N-18 cents, this Gem proof has little field reflectivity on the obverse, with lightly mirrored reverse fields. The strike is deficient, especially evident on the hair curls. However, the surfaces are virtually full red with light bluish-brown toning on each side.

A previous owner of this piece was Dr. Christian Alexander Allenburger, the Nebraska surgeon who was born in Russia in 1872. After graduating from Chicago's Rush Medical College in 1895, Allenburger relocated to Nebraska. He was honored by the Platte County Medical Society in 1951 for his medical practice there spanning more than 50 years. Our EAC grade PR63. Population: 2 in 65 Red and Brown, 0 finer (7/13).
