1793 S-8, B-13 Wreath Cent, MS64 Brown
Census Level Specimen

1793 1C Wreath Cent, Vine and Bars MS64 Brown PCGS. S-8, B-13, R.3. The emission sequence of a group of die varieties states the order in which they were actually minted. That sequence is determined through careful study of the die states for the different obverse and reverse dies. In the case of the Wreath cents, there is some confusion regarding the proper sequence of production. One variable that is almost never considered when studying die states and attempting to determine the proper order of production is the number of coinage presses in use. Most studies assume that only one press was used. However, a second or third press used simultaneously will substantially alter the die state study and change any proposed emission sequence.
A single reverse die was used for S-5, S-6, S-7, and NC-5. That reverse may have been in one coinage press, with four different obverse dies used in that press. Meanwhile, a single obverse die was used for S-8, S-9, and NC-4, used with three other reverse dies, and they might have been used in a second coinage press. One additional obverse die was used in both presses, creating NC-5 with the reverse in the first press, and S-10 with one of the reverse dies from the second press. These two paragraphs may seem confusing, but then the study of early mint processes was little documented, and can only be reconstructed through examination of the actual coins that still exist today. Hopefully some who read this will be intrigued and may wish to continue the study.
This impressive Choice Mint State 1793 Wreath cent has highly lustrous chestnut-brown surfaces with faint traces of mahogany toning and few marks of any kind, save for tiny rim nicks outside the beaded border at 7 o'clock on the reverse. This stunning specimen ranks quite high in the condition census and is destined for a top-level collection. Our EAC grade AU55.
