1795 V-5, LM-8 Flowing Hair Half Dime, MS65
Iridescent Originality, Album Toned
Ex: Benson

1795 H10C MS65 PCGS. CAC. V-5, LM-8, R.3. Ex: Benson. This coin was Dr. Benson's primary representative of the 1795 half dime, out of one of the finest half dime collections ever assembled. Prior to the Goldberg sale in 2002, the Benson coins were stored in original Wayte Raymond coin boards for 50-plus years, where they acquired spectacular original toning. This amazingly beautiful, unabraded half dime is an example of the LM-8 variety, characterized by several positional diagnostics including the position of star 1 between curls 2 and 3, the spacing of LIB in LIBERTY, and the branch showing no berries under the left (facing) wing.

A number of spectacular die cracks represent the LM-8 die pair, with the most noticeable one meandering from the rim above LIBERTY through the Y, into Liberty's nose, then across the face and neck all the way to the portrait truncation. Oddly, neither Logan-McCloskey nor Valentine mention broad recutting of the 79 in the date that is also diagnostic of this variety.

Virtually no marks are seen on this Gem half dime, with the surfaces covered with iridescent originality. Blue, gold, green, and rose-yellow accents combine with lustrous, silver-gray toning for excellent eye appeal. The portrait and eagle are a bit soft at the center, but all other details are boldly rendered. This once-in-a-lifetime half dime is destined for the most advanced type or half dime collection. Population: 8 in 65, 11 finer (3/14).
