Description

1855-D Quarter Eagle, AU55
Rare, Fewer than 60 Pieces Known

1855-D $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. CAC. Variety 19-N. Ex: Green Pond. The 1855-D is the second-rarest quarter eagle from the Dahlonega Mint, trailing only the 1856-D. The 1855-D had a paltry mintage of 1,123 coins, of which only 50 or 60 pieces survive in all grades. Doug Winter calls this issue "a very rare coin in About Uncirculated with as few as a dozen or so known and most are in the lower range of this grade." The certified population data would seem to substantiate this assessment, taking into account a few likely resubmissions.

The present Choice AU coin is indisputably high-end for the issue, showing original olive-gold surfaces with tinges of orange and peach. As is characteristic of the issue, the eagle's legs and talons and the hair curls around Liberty's face are slightly weak. The obverse fields show a few planchet laminations, not unusual for the issue. In terms of preservation, this CAC-endorsed 1855-D quarter eagle is outstanding, and the eye appeal is far above average. Population: 9 in 55, 4 finer (11/15).(Registry values: P2)
