Description

1845 Half Dime, PR64
Only Seven Known Proofs

1845 H10C PR64 PCGS. CAC. When we offered the Phil Kaufman specimen in January 2008, we prepared a roster of seven different 1845 half dimes. Since that time, an eighth example appeared in the proof set from the Eric P. Newman Collection, and that coin was graded PR65. When there are only eight examples of a rare coin in existence, and one of those is permanently impounded in a museum, the census rank of the remaining pieces is less a concern than the opportunity to bid on an example. While NGC has certified nine submissions as proof examples, PCGS has only graded three examples including this piece and two other PR64 specimens (7/13). This Choice proof exhibits considerable cameo contrast with deeply mirrored fields and frosty devices beneath gorgeous gold and iridescent toning. An impressive representative of an early proof rarity.(Registry values: P3)
