Description

1893 Isabella Quarter, Toned PR66
Seldom Seen in Proof Format

1893 25C Isabella Quarter PR66 NGC. The 1893 Isabella quarter became an outlier within the silver commemorative series early on, as it was the second issue for the Columbian Exposition after the 1892-93 Columbian halves. Although commemorative half dollar issues would eventually number in the dozens, the Isabella quarter would remain the only commemorative issue of the quarter denomination that would ensue over the course of many years of Mint history.

The Isabella quarters are normally well-struck, but a few exemplary coins such as the present Premium Gem have been certified as proofs. The fields are deeply mirrored and reflective. Each device on this piece is exceptionally sharp, every jewel, hair, leaf, and drape showing full detail. The reverse is equally sharp on the hair, distaff, and spindle. The broader-than-normal rims are also characteristic of the issue. Walter Breen writes that fewer than 15 are seen in all, although there is no documented production figure. This exquisite coin offers intermingled aqua, pink, and silver patina. A real prize for the connoisseur of commemoratives. Census: 4 in 66, 0 finer (12/13).
