Description

Remarkable Choice XF 1871-CC Twenty

1871-CC $20 XF45 PCGS. Variety 1-A. In A Numismatic History & Analysis: Type II Double Eagles 1866-1876, published in 2002 by the author, Michael Fuljenz calls this issue "the most difficult Type Two Double Eagle for the collector of average means to acquire." Second in rarity and desirability only to the fabulous and legendary 1870-CC double eagle--the most desirable gold coin struck at the Carson City Mint--the 1871-CC is normally found in grades from VG to VF. This Choice XF specimen shows considerable luster--most 1871-CC specimens are so worn that they show no remaining luster at all--and some prooflike tendencies, along with the expected heavy abrasions and a fairly flat strike on Liberty's hair. The strike on both the obverse periphery and the reverse is bold, however, and in terms of overall eye appeal this coin approaches the AU level. Expect spirited bidding on this remarkable example. Population: 37 in 45, 30 finer (5/06).
