Description

1860-D Gold Dollar, Semiprooflike AU58
In a Green Label Holder

1860-D G$1 AU58 PCGS. Variety 12-P. The 1860-D gold dollar's enticingly small mintage of 1,566 pieces produced a total survival estimated at only 100 to 125 coins in all grades, per Doug Winter. Mint State examples are extremely rare, and high-end AU coins are hardly any more plentiful. Winter writes (2013): "Uncirculated 1860-D gold dollars are extremely rare. I doubt if more than five or six are known..." The present near-Mint offering displays glimmering semiprooflike fields with a characteristically weak strike. Orange-gold coloration masks a few light marks that accompany the grade. A finer 1860-D gold dollar will prove almost impossible for most collectors to acquire, even if such an example can be located. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 12 in 58 (1 in 58+), 12 finer (10/16).
