Description

1857-S Double Eagle, MS65
Reflective, Semiprooflike Fields

1857-S $20 MS65NGC. Discovery of the S.S. Central America yielded more than 5,000 examples of the 1857-S double eagle -- most in Mint State grades. Prior to the discovery, virtually no Choice Uncirculated examples of the issue were known (and certainly no Gem quality coins). That all changed when many of the recovered double eagles were in the same state of preservation as the day they left the San Francisco Mint.

There is no notation on the NGC holder regarding the origin of this lustrous, pristine double eagle. The fields are reflective and semiprooflike (or fully prooflike in many areas), surrounding lightly frosted devices. Abrasions are at a minimum, with a small, minor reeding mark in the field beneath Liberty's chin but no other marks of any significance. Delicate lines in the fields -- visible with a glass -- are suggestive of die polishing just prior to striking. The coin is fully struck and a lustrous, apricot-gold in color, with eye appeal deserving of the NGC Plus designation it received. Garrett and Guth list the 1857-S twenty in their book, 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.(Registry values: N4719)
