Description

1858 Double Eagle, High-End MS62
Condition Rarity, Remarkable Eye Appeal

1858 $20 MS62 NGC. CAC. The moderate mintage of the 1858 double eagle exceeded 211,000 coins, but today the issue is a condition rarity. Most examples are well-circulated, and certified survivors average only AU50 or thereabouts. Any appearance of a Mint State example is a noteworthy occurrence. This MS62 NGC specimen shows radiant cartwheel luster running over orange-gold surfaces that are fairly prooflike on both sides, seemingly an early strike from a fresh die pair. A smattering of light marks determines the grade, but this is a coin with remarkable eye appeal and an extremely high collectibility quotient. Probably underrated in the market right now, given how infrequently examples at this level appear. Census: 7 in 62, 1 finer (3/14).
