Description

1871-CC Twenty Dollar, XF45
Scarce Carson City Issue
Pleasing Orange-Gold Example

1871-CC $20 XF45 NGC. Variety 2-A. Lightly abraded surfaces show no singularly large marks, and appealing orange-gold color covers both sides of the coin. This issue is almost always found heavily circulated and bagmarked. It is also the second-rarest issue of the Carson City double eagle series (behind its big brother, the incomparable 1870-CC). While numerous ticks, nicks, and digs are softened by 15 points of wear, the overall impression of this coin is smooth and appealing. A shallow rim bruise at 9 o'clock on the obverse is mentioned for accuracy but does not detract from the appeal. Mint luster remains at the margins and glows among the devices. Only 17,387 pieces were minted of this scarce issue. It is the Variety 2-A die pair, seldom seen, with the date a tiny bit lower than the normally seen 1-A variety.
