1863 Postage Currency Ten Cents in Aluminum
Judd-328A, 8.02-Grain Planchet, PR64

1863 10C Dime, Judd-328A, Pollock-398, Cassel-4, High R.7, PR64 PCGS. 8.02 grains. The usual obverse design that features the Federal shield with arrows, surrounded by an inverted laurel wreath, with the inscription EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES around. The reverse contains the denomination 10 CENTS in two lines above the date, with the inscriptions POSTAGE CURRENCY and ACT JULY 1862 around. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. Each aluminum striking of this design varies in composition. Most likely these were struck as metallurgical trial pieces to test color, malleability, oxidation resistance, and resistance to damage in the striking process. The SEM-EDX composition of this piece as determined by S&N Labs on certificate number 70487.64/4486786 is 97.5% aluminum and 2.5% iron. This is a bright example with the often-found contrast between the fields and devices. Only a couple of spots of oxidation are seen.
