Description

1860 Quarter Eagle, MS61
Struck From the Old Reverse Hub

1860 $2 1/2 Old Reverse, Type One, MS61 NGC. The reverse hub for the quarter eagle was slightly revised in 1859, but it remained in use through 1861 with diminishing numbers of coins struck in 1860 and 1861. Contrary to the statement in Garrett-Guth that this change was discovered in the early 1990s, we remember Doug Winter and Jim Halperin being aware of this hub alteration in 1982. The fields on this piece retain much original die polish with the resultant semiprooflike fields on each side. A bit softly struck over the high points, the surfaces show a number of small abrasions but the only field disturbance worthy of mention is a rectangular planchet flake out of the obverse field to the left of the brow of Liberty. Census: 7 in 61, 3 finer (9/17).(Registry values: P2)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25JR, PCGS# 97791, Greysheet# 8284)
