Description

Undeniably Rare 1846 Seated Liberty Half Dime, Certified PR66 by NGC

1846 H10C PR66 NGC. A well struck Gem that has virtually pristine surfaces and original yellow-green and aqua patina. A lintmark (as struck) is in the field below Liberty's raised arm. In his 1992 reference The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dimes, Al Blythe states that only 10 to 12 proofs were struck. These can be identified by the lower termination of the shield, which is left of the date on the proofs but not the business strikes. The business strikes are also quite rare, as only 27,000 pieces were struck. In fact, the 1846 is the rarest Liberty Seated Half Dime from the beginning of the series in 1837 until the mid-1860s, when the Civil War removed silver coinage from circulation and caused token production at the Philadelphia Mint. NGC has only certified a total of 7 proof 1846 Half Dimes in all grades, one or more of which could well be resubmissions. Three coins are in the PR66 grade, with just one finer at PR67. PCGS has graded only 6 examples, with the finest as PR65 (10/02).
