Description

Very Scarce Near-Gem 1856 Proof Half Dime

1856 H10C PR64 PCGS. Breen-3078. Upright 5, Straight Top, Closed 6. This is one of the very scarce proofs from 1856, struck two years prior to the higher commercial production of proof coinage which began in 1858. Probably no more than 30-40 proofs survive today from an unknown, but obviously very small mintage. The fields are deeply mirrored and each side is mostly brilliant with just a touch of light golden patina vaguely present. The devices also show just a bit of light frosting which gives the piece a moderate cameo contrast. Identifiable by a tiny grease stain to the left of star 13 and several specks of color in the center of the reverse. Population: 7 in 64, 1 finer (10/02).
