Description

1861-S Ten Dollar, AU53
Heavily Circulated S-Mint Issue

1861-S $10 AU53 PCGS. The California mint increased eagle production by 10,500 coins or 210% between 1860 and 1861. Garrett and Guth suggest the increase likely reflects increased demand for smaller denomination gold coins, which were in short supply compared to the mass-produced S-mint double eagles. The 1861-S was a commercial workhorse and is usually seen in VF to XF condition. About Uncirculated survivors are rare. This is a lightly abraded example with partial luster remaining in the recesses. Light green-gold surfaces show well-struck devices with minor friction. Population: 6 in 53, 9 finer (7/15).(Registry values: N4719)
