Description
Enigmatic Hand Fraction
PERSIA(?). Uncertain mint. AR 1/32 siglos (5mm, 0.17 gm). Choice
Fine. Persian standard(?). Hand, apotropaic or fruit balanced
on thumb / Patterned incuse punch with three striations. Apparently
unlisted in standard references. The striated reverse of this intriguing fraction brings to mind the patterned reverse punches of Babylon imitating Achaemenid Persia, though Babylonian patterned reverses are extant only in gold. Perhaps the hand design is a crude imitation of the typical Persian king or hero motif?
