1853-C G$1 MS64 NGC. Variety 1. Ex: Elrod. Sole die pair for
the year. Like most Type One branch mint gold dollars, the 1853-C
poses a significant challenge in Mint State grades, but a handful
of exceptional pieces survive. This coin, ex: Elrod, is among them,
a gorgeous near-Gem with utterly original gold-orange patina and
glimmers of lighter yellow. Intricately detailed hair curls on
Liberty's portrait match the strong definition on most of the
surrounding stars. This smooth and beautiful Condition Census coin
is housed in an earlier-generation NGC holder with external
