Description
1853 Assay Office Twenty Dollar
900 Thous., K-18, Choice AU
1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. AU55 PCGS. K-18,
R.2. The 900 Thous. 1853 twenty was the final issue from the
United States Assay Office of Gold, struck shortly before the doors
were closed in favor of the pending San Francisco Mint. The K-18
mintage was significant, struck from a number of hubbed dies, but
most were eventually melted, and the variety is scarce relative to
early Federal S-mint issues. This sun-gold representative shows
light wear on the fletchings, but cartwheel luster is apparent.
Less abraded than usual, although a few thin marks near the ED in
UNITED merit passing mention. Listed on page 395 of the 2017
Guide Book.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# ANHD, PCGS# 10013, Greysheet# 11696)
