Description
Extremely Rare 1846-D Quarter Eagle, MS61
1846-D $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. While relatively available in lower grades, no one can dispute the rarity of the '46-D in mint condition. Only 2-3 pieces are believed known in Uncirculated. Both the Duke's Creek and North Georgia examples contained high-end AU pieces. In our 1997 ANA Sale, we offered an MS62 coin that had been spot tooled and showed evidence of rim filing, and it still realized more than $10,000! This piece has well defined features and bright reddish-orange color. The surfaces display the abrasions one normally associates with this issue; however, the only one of singular note is a vertical scratch on Liberty's cheek. This piece is sure to see strong competition from advanced Dahlonega collectors.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25H3, PCGS# 7742, Greysheet# 8352)
