Description
Finest Certified Proof 1878 Ten Dollars PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC
1878 $10 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC. The sharply struck devices display exceptional contrast relative to the deeply mirrored fields. Tiny alloy spots concealed on the obverse rim at 5 o'clock and near the eighth star, and a short mint-made lintmark near the upper inner point of the third star provide pedigree markers for future researchers. The left scroll end is attenuated from die polish, as produced. Careful inspection of the fields reveals numerous raised die lines, as made, but hairlines are not encountered. The only imperfections on the piece are a few pinpoint areas of granularity near 1 o'clock.Needless to say, the 1878 is extremely rare in proof format. A mere 20 pieces were struck, and it is doubtful that half of these have survived unimpaired. NGC has certified a mere three pieces in all grades, and the present piece has both the finest numerical grade and the sole Ultra Cameo designation among that trio of specimens. PCGS has certified a pair as PR64 without a Cameo or Deep Cameo designation, and none above PR63 with a Cameo or Deep Cameo designation. Of course, duplicate submissions may lurk within this select grouping. Rare date gold has long been regarded as the caviar of numismatics, and an opportunity to acquire the finest certified proof 1878 Eagle may not come again for many years.(#98818) (Registry values: P4)
