Description

Near-Mint 1849-D Gold Dollar

1849-D G$1 AU58 NGC. Variety 1-A. Once it was decided that a one dollar gold piece was a necessary part of commerce, all of the operating mints at the time quickly began production. Just three months after the bill was passed (on March 3, 1849), dies were on the way to the Dahlonega and New Orleans Mints. Those dies were shipped on June 2, and received in Dahlonega on June 16. Production began quickly and totaled 21,588 coins for the year. This is a typical example with bright yellow gold color and nearly full luster. It is reasonable well defined at the centers, with weak border details as almost always. A few tiny scratches and other minor surface marks are present, and these are almost always encountered. A lovely and pleasing example of the first Dahlonega Gold Dollar coinage.(#7507) (Registry values: N1793)
