Description
Seldom-Seen, High Grade (MS60) 1840-D Narrow Mill Half Eagle
1840-D $5 Narrow Mill MS60 NGC. The 1840-D is an important first-year issue that is very underrated in high grades. The design of Liberty was modified slightly in 1840 to the design it would retain until 1908. However, in this first year two diameters were used. This is the more frequently encountered Narrow Rim variant. Only 85-95 pieces are known today in all grades out of the original mintage of 22,896 pieces. A mere 11 Mint State coins are currently known at NGC and PCGS, not counting resubmissions. The current example is well struck, with the hair curl below the ear of Liberty showing a good deal of definition. The original color is predominantly a dusky green-gold hue, with red-orange accents near the obverse center. The surfaces lack the often-seen planchet laminations that are so often encountered. Both obverse and reverse are peppered with numerous small abrasions that account for the grade, the most obvious of which are a small abrasion above the 8 in the date, and a field mark on the left reverse.
