Description

Highly Rare Early Dated Mexican Gold Cob

Philip V gold Cob Escudo 1703/2 MXo-L MS64 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM51.1, Cal-1727, Oro Macuquino-162 (overdate not noted; same dies). 3.51gm. An exceptionally rare early date, both from Philip V's reign in general and the Mexico City mint in particular. Only the second firmly datable specimen we have been able to locate, with the one other--plated in Oro Macuquino and sold in 1972--having been struck from the same dies. Produced on a comparatively regular flan for the issue, following the highly irregular emissions of Charles II, it seems quite likely that the present offering could well be among the finest, if not the finest known. The only representative yet certified, and of the utmost desirability.
