Description
1864 Dime, Attractively Toned Gem
Among the Lowest Series Mintages
1864 10C F-102a, R.5, MS65 PCGS. Brilliant interiors turn
outwardly to peach-orange, purple, and cobalt-blue coloration. The
strike is crisply defined on the obverse with softness showing on
the upper-left wreath. Bold clash marks occur throughout the
reverse and to a lesser degree on the obverse. A few scattered
flecks limit the grade.Variety: Fortin-102a, the usually seen business strike die pair.
Population Data (9/15): Of the 16 MS65 submissions at both leading services combined, nine are at PCGS (one MS65+) and seven are at NGC. Finer submissions include five at each service.
Heritage Commentary: The Philadelphia Mint manufactured a meager total of 11,000 business strikes in 1864 with an additional 460 proofs. The issue is consequently always in demand. Perhaps 400 examples survive in all grades, although only 15% are thought extant in Mint State and only 3% in Gem condition or better.
Provenance: Purchased from Pinnacle Rarities (11/2006).
Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 538202, Base PCGS# 4639)
Weight: 2.49 grams
Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
