Brittany. François I gold Ecu d'Or au chevalier ND (1442-1450) UNC Details (Reverse Cleaned) NGC, Rennes mint, Fr-95, PdA-1194, Dup-318, Bigot-1088, Boudeau-124, Jéz-385c. 3.38gm. +: FRΛnCISCVS: DЄI: GRΛ: BRITOnVm: DVX: R: (double mullet stops), François, crowned and armored on horseback, brandishing sword in right hand, and holding shield in left, advancing right / +: DЄVS: In: ΛDIVTORIVm: mЄVm: In: TΛnDЄ: R: (double mullet stops), cross fleuillue with each limb terminating in trefoil, ermines in angles, all within quatrefoil. Minted from a characteristically rusty obverse die, though one that has still managed to capture a great degree of detail over the obverse scene. Despite the noted reverse cleaning, which remains quite light overall, it is clear that the die cutter took great care in his execution of the legends, presenting an elegant sharpness that has been well-impressed from a heavily polish die.
