Very Rare Uncirculated 1850-D Gold Dollar

1850-D G$1 MS61 PCGS. Variety 2-C. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). Early die state with just a bit of die clashing seen at the upper center of the reverse.

RARITY INFORMATION: The 1850-D is the fifth rarest Dahlonega gold dollar in high grades. There are an estimated 110-120 pieces known in all grades with possibly six or seven accurately graded Uncirculated pieces accounted for. There are two or three that grade Mint State 63 with the rest of the Uncirculated pieces in the Mint State 61 to Mint State 62 range.

STRIKE: The obverse shows some minor weakness on the hair curls around the face but the stars are quite sharp with a number that display full radial lines. The reverse is extremely sharp with a very bold wreath, full date, and a strong mintmark.

SURFACES: Both sides show some light hairlines (not from cleaning), which is consistent with the assigned grade. There are no noticeable marks visible to the naked eye. This is unusual as most 1850-D gold dollars are heavily abraded in the fields.

LUSTER: The luster on the obverse is slightly subdued in the center but is full in the protected areas between the stars. The reverse has very good luster and is well above average.

COLORATION: Some pale olive shadings can be seen on the obverse, while the reverse has a more uniform light green-gold coloration. The color on this coin is better than typically seen, which is often bright and unnatural in appearance.

EYE APPEAL: This is a very pleasing coin for the grade. It lacks the clashmarks (except to the right of the denomination) and heavy abrasions that are seen on most 1850-D gold dollars and has not been brightened as a result of overdipping. It is extremely challenging to locate an example of this issue that has acceptable eye appeal.

COMPARABLES: In their February 1999 auction, Superior sold an NGC MS62 for $10,350. A PCGS MS62 realized $12,650 in the October 1999 Bass II sale. No certified MS61 coins have been offered at public auction in a number of years.

PEDIGREE: Purchased in January 1998. This is the plate coin in the second edition of Winter's "Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, 1838-1861" and is listed in the updated Condition Census. (#7511) (Registry values: P2, N9000)
