Splendid 1882 Three, PR53
1882 $3 PR53 PCGS. As was sometimes the case with proof issues of the era, some examples entered circulation or were mishandled, inadvertently or otherwise. Fortunately, the current example saw limited time in the hands of noncollectors and was rescued for the sake of posterity. From the minuscule mintage of 76 pieces, perhaps fewer than half survive in any grade. Numerous small contact marks are scattered over each side, but the areas protected by the devices still show deep reflectivity.(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 28AR, PCGS# 8046, Greysheet# 8754)
