Description

1895-S Quarter Dollar, MS66
Recut Mintmark, Conditionally Rare

1895-S 25C MS66 PCGS. DL-101, Repunched Mintmark. High-end Uncirculated examples of the 1895-S quarter dollar are rare, particularly Premium Gems. This is only the second MS66 coin that we have ever offered, although the numerically finer MS67 PCGS and MS68 NGC coins have each crossed our auction block on a few notable occasions. The last MS66 piece we offered was in lot 7271 of our June 2000 Long Beach sale, although that piece is the same as the more recently offered MS67 PCGS coin, which is now more accurately graded. These auction appearances clearly show the rarity of this issue in high grade.

The current coin is sharp and frosty with exceptional surface preservation. Lovely sea-green, gold, and amber hues adorn each side. The mintmark is recut, showing a secondary S to the left of the primary mintmark. Population: 6 in 66 (3 in 66+), 1 finer (9/17).(Registry values: N2998)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 23Y6, PCGS# 5612, Greysheet# 5420)
