Description

Remarkable 1807 Capped Bust, Large Stars Half, 50 Over 20, MS64

1807 50C Capped Bust, Large Stars, 50 Over 20 MS64 PCGS. O-112, R.1. In 1807 the Mint introduced a new half dollar design that collectors today have come to call the Turban Head or Capped Bust variety. Whether unfamiliarity with the new design or some more-pedestrian excuse is responsible for the remarkable dual-denomination error is an answer that is forever lost to numismatic posterity.
Much of the former 2 is still visible on this remarkable example, which sports boldly struck olive-gray surfaces with glints of aqua in the recesses, with considerable luster and enormous eye appeal. While this is a common variety, its popularity is assured as a Guide Book example. A nice and collectible piece, sure to inspire spirited bidding. The "Large Stars, 50/20" is noted on the PCGS label.(Registry values: N4719)
