Rare Proof 1857 Gold Dollar, PR64 Cameo

1857 G$1 PR64 Cameo NGC. Akers' gold dollar reference estimates that only eight to 10 proof 1857 gold dollars are known today, hailing as they do from a vintage the year before the Mint began widely offering proof coins to the collecting public. Given the total certified population at NGC and PCGS of 11 pieces and accounting for resubmissions, that estimate appears near to the mark today. The present example shows the sharp detail characteristic of proofs, as well as the low date that slants up slightly toward the right. The orange-gold surfaces are well mirrored, providing considerable contrast against frosty devices. A curving lintmark in the left obverse field provides a pedigree marker, and some faint slide marks on the cheek preclude a Gem grade. This coin nevertheless offers broad appeal, both numismatically and aesthetically. Census: 2 in 64 Cameo, 3 finer (7/07).(Registry values: P6)
