Description

Shining Choice 1897-O Eagle

1897-O $10 MS64 PCGS. Beginning in 1895, the New Orleans Mint briefly fell into a pattern where it would strike eagles on odd-numbered years only. No O-mint ten dollar gold pieces were minted in 1896, though 42,500 such coins were made in 1897, and 1898 saw a gap in production as well. (The trend would continue until 1904, when an issue came directly on the heels of 1903.) The vibrant orange-gold surfaces of this delectable near-Gem have faint regions in the fields with a pinkish-violet aura. Well-defined centers are another of this coin's striking characteristics, though the peripheral stars show a degree of softness. Attractively preserved with surprisingly mark-free devices, though minor abrasions in the fields preclude a Gem grade. Population: 3 in 64, 2 finer (7/07).(Registry values: N4719)
