Description

Condition Rarity 1914-D Eagle, MS66

1914-D $10 MS66 NGC. The 1914-D eagle, with a mintage of 343,500 pieces, is an important condition rarity in the Indian Head ten dollar series. David Akers, in his catalog of The Thaine Price Collection, sums this up well: "... in Gem condition, the 1914-D is actually very rare, much more so than any of the Philadelphia Mint issues from 1908-1915 except the 1909, and roughly comparable in rarity to much more highly rated issues as the 1908-S and 1916-S."
The radiantly lustrous surfaces of this MS66 example display a trace of the usually seen very fine granularity, and possess a soft peach-gold patination laced with light green and orange. Striking details are bold on each side. Nicely preserved surfaces exhibit just a few minor marks that may help to pedigree the coin: one above the eyebrow, another on the eagle's neck, and one to the lower right of the last T in TRUST. Census: 11 in 66, 6 finer (6/07).
