Description

1794 HEAD OF 1793 CENT, VF35
THE SHELDON-NAFTZGER S-17A

1794 S-17a R5- Head of 1793 VF35 NGC. Glossy tan and light brown delicately woodgrained with darker steel brown toning on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. The notable marks are a few thin, barely visible planchet striations on the cap (as struck), a minor rim bruise under the 4 in the date, and a small rim nick over the B in LIBERTY. One of the smoothest planchets seen for a variety that is plagued by planchet flaws, and those flaws are often quite severe. Later die state, Heck die state 4, Breen state III, with a dull radial die crack left of the L in LIBERTY and a very strong crack at the end of the pole that created a shelf in the surface, lower below the crack, higher above. A premium example of this tough variety. Graded VF30 and CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #20003. Del Bland says VF30 and tied for CC#3. This cataloger's EAC grade is VF30. The finest example of the variety resides in the ANS Collection, and all the top pieces have some planchet flaws. A great cent that comes with a great provenance. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. NGC population 1; none finer. 6357150-002.

Dr. Robert A. Schuman,
a native of Baltimore, is a retired radiologist who lives near Scranton, Pennsylvania. His collecting interests began at the age of 10, and he once worked for Thomas Warfield at the Mason-Dixon Coin Exchange. During that employment from 1958 to 1963, Schuman learned to attribute and appreciate large cents, with a special interest in 1794s. In 1971 he realized that the 1794 S-19b in the Masters Sale was misattributed as S-18b, and acquired the coin at that sale, achieving national recognition among large cent collectors. Today, Schuman owns the finest set of 1794 Head of 1793 cents in collectors' hands, and he has assembled a superb collection of Hard Times tokens.
