Description

1793 S-9 Wreath Cent, AU50
Early Die State, Uncracked Reverse

1793 1C S-9 R2 Wreath Cent, Vine & Bars Edge, Small LIBERTY, AU50 NGC. Rather glossy chocolate and steel brown with lighter brown and chocolate toning in some of the protected areas on the reverse. A sharp, attractive cent that looks smooth to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals extremely fine roughness covering the planchet. No verdigris and the only marks are a light rim bruise left of the fraction and a planchet lamination in the leaves at the top of the wreath to TE in STATES (as struck). Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I, with an uncracked reverse. This cataloger's EAC grade is net VF35. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the NGC label (3387405-005).
Ex Mid-American Rare Coin Auctions (Capital City) 2/15/1985:47 ($4180)-COL Steven K. Ellsworth.

The Capitol City Sale, conducted by Mid-American Rare Coin Auctions on February 15-16, 1985 in New Carrollton, Maryland, presented a wide-ranging offering that combined "fresh" material from a southern institutional collection with major consignments including a complete 1904 proof set, an 1879 $4 Stella, several High Relief double eagles, and the so-called "Himera Treasure" of ancient coins. Cataloged by Ron Guth, Jeff Garrett, and Jonathan Kern, the sale was designed to highlight rarity and quality across multiple series, and introduced innovations such as black-background color plates to better emphasize the coins' natural appearance. The event balanced broad general appeal with specialized material, reflecting Mid-American's growth as a rising auction house in the 1980s.

For copper specialists, the auction offered a substantial run of half cents and large cents from 1793 onward, with Chain, Wreath, Liberty Cap, Draped Bust, and Classic Head types carefully described by variety. Highlights included pleasing collector-grade Chain and Wreath cents, strong early Liberty Caps such as the "Bent Lock" 1794 Sheldon-22, and rare Draped Bust varieties like the 1798/7 overdate (Sheldon-151), cataloged as Condition Census quality. Additional interest came from unusual error coins, including an overstruck brockage 1798 large cent, and well-preserved middle and late dates in choice collector grades. Together, these offerings underscored the catalog's copper strength within an already diverse sale, giving early copper enthusiasts meaningful opportunities alongside the broader mix of U.S. gold, silver, and foreign issues.
