Description

Appealing 1795 Half Dollar, O-104, Choice XF

1795 50C 2 Leaves, O-104, R.4, XF45 NGC. A small die lump below star 15 identifies the obverse, while the reverse has the useful diagnostic of a die defect that connects the knot of the ribbon to the rock above. Only 1794 and 1795 half dollars feature the Flowing Head design, and examples from the first year are quite rare. Although all 1795 halves are scarce, they can be obtained at a more affordable price and would be a perfect representative for a type collector without unlimited funds.
Both sides of the present piece have traces of luster, which is remarkable given the condition. Scattered abrasions on the surfaces limit the grade of this otherwise excellent example. The reverse has numerous shallow adjustment marks at the center. Lovely pale gray toning covers the surfaces, with hints of gold and steel in the margins. A well-detailed piece with charming eye appeal.
