Description
Deep Die Cap Obverse 1996 Cent MS64 Red
1996 1C Lincoln Cent--Deep Die Cap Obverse--MS64 Red PCGS. A struck cent (not the present piece) failed to eject from the dies. A planchet (to become the present lot) was fed between the obverse die and the struck cent. The strike gave the present piece a brockage reverse, and forced the obverse partly around the edge of the obverse die. Additional strikes caused the cent to further wrap around the obverse die, while the brockage reverse image expanded and distorted. Incused and reversed portions of the date and LIBERTY are still legible on the reverse. Some of the zinc interior has penetrated the copper plating. The cap is sufficiently deep that it can barely fit within the standard PCGS holder.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 22JU, PCGS# 3136, Greysheet# 2310)
