Ex Thomas Sebring, Bowers & Merena 3/21/1996:40 (as VG8, $715)-COL Steven K. Ellsworth.

The March 1996 Bowers and Merena Baltimore auction featured the important large cent collections of Thomas H. Sebring and Gunther P. Garbe, both long-time students of early copper. The sale opened with nearly 700 lots of large cents, beginning with 1793 Chain, Wreath, and Liberty Cap examples and moving into an extensive run of 1794s, many Condition Census or finest known for their Sheldon varieties. Subsequent highlights included Liberty Caps of 1795-1796 and Draped Bust cents of the late 1790s and early 1800s. The catalog stressed detailed die attribution and rarity ratings, underscoring the scholarly significance of these holdings.

Later series were also strong, with high-grade Classic Head cents, a complete offering of middle and late dates, and numerous proofs from the 1830s through the 1850s. Many of these coins traced pedigrees to Newcomb and other major collectors, reinforcing their importance to large cent specialists. Together, the Sebring and Garbe collections provided breadth, quality, and variety depth, making the 1996 auction a benchmark event for students of early copper.
