Archaic Arethusa
Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny. Ca. 485-466 BC. AR tetradrachm (24mm, 17.11 gm, 3h). Struck under Hieron I, ca. 478-475 BC. Charioteer driving quadriga right, holding kentron and reins, Nike flying right above to crowning horses / ΣVPΑΚΟ-ΣΙΟΝ, diademed head of Arethusa right in Archaic style, surrounded by four dolphins. Boehringer VIIIb, 147 variant (V65/- ). SNG ANS 41-2 (same obverse die). This reverse die apparently unrecorded in the major references (see CNG E-auction 22 [28 April 2010] lot 16 for another example from the same reverse die). Well struck and lustrous.
