Description

Notable Mint State 1844-O Ten

1844-O $10 MS60 NGC. With its six-figure mintage, the 1844-O eagle is a readily available issue in most grades, though heavy circulation and other forms of attrition have curtailed the number of Mint State survivors. Doug Winters, in his Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint, suggests an extant population of five to seven such pieces, a figure that adheres closely to the current population (assuming a handful of resubmissions in the data).
Though the present coin exhibits several significant abrasions, including one to the left of Liberty's neck, the overall eye appeal is strong for a coin awarded the minimal Mint State designation. The impressively lustrous surfaces show subtle orange-gold hues, and the strike is slightly above-average. Census: 5 in 60, 3 finer (9/08).(Registry values: N4719)
