Description
Fascinating Judd-170a Copper-Nickel
Flying Eagle Cent Pattern, PR62
1855 1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-170a, R.8, PR62 PCGS.
Thirteen stars surround an eagle that is flying slightly upwards,
similar to the Christian Gobrecht/Titian Peale flying eagle design
for the Gobrecht dollars but with a longer, curved neck to the
eagle. The date 1855 is below with slanted 5s, and the reverse is
similar to the large cent. The planchet is slightly smaller than
the large cent, but larger than the famous 1856 Flying Eagle cent.
Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. Per the holder, weight
99.15 grains, composition 91% copper, 8.8% nickel (with rounding
error/trace content of 0.2%). This unusual piece has streaks of
orange and brown on each side. Impressively detailed, though flaws
are visible in the fields.Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 62428, Greysheet# 213528)
