Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR denarius (18mm, 3.62 gm, 6h). NGC Choice XF 4/5 - 4/5. Spain, Colonia Patricia(?), 19-18 BC. Head of Augustus right, wearing oak wreath / CAESAR AVGVSTVS, round shield inscribed CL•V; flanked by laurel branches, S-P/Q-R around, linear border. RIC I 36a. Pretty marigold backlight.

Among the honors voted by the Roman Senate in 27 BC to Augustus was the Clipeus Virtutis, or shield of valor, which was given, along with branches of laurel, to a soldier who had saved the life of a comrade in battle.
