Description

SYRO-MESOPOTAMIAN. Ca. 2nd-3rd century AD. Clay figure of a seated mother goddess with child. Buff-colored clay statuette depicts a rather prim-looking seated woman, 5.5" (12.5 cm) tall, cradling an infant, who reaches for her breast; she sits on tall, high-backed and rounded chair, her hair done in a severe coiffure with a central part, two sidelocks covering her ears, with a rolled band around crown of head; she wears a floor-length shift and a heavy neck torque. The back is unfinished so that the chair melds into the back of the figurine.

The goddess likely represents a later interpretation of Isis / Astarte / Atargatis, showing a clear transition toward the eventual iconic "Madonna and Child."
