Bold Victory Medal of the Battle of Nieuport

"Battle of Nieuport" silver Medal 1600 MS63 NGC, Eimer-72, MI-174/171. 55mm. Plain edge. By G. van Bijlaer. Produced to celebrate Prince Maurice's victory over the Spanish at the Battle of Nieuport. CAPTIS VXXX MILIT SIGNIS ORD AVSP PRINCEPS MAVR VICTOR REDIIT Maritime and land battle scene with tetragrammaton above // COMPVLSO AD DEDIT PRAESID ANDREAE CAESOFVGATOQA NEOP ALB AVST Besieged Fort St. Andrew. A scintillating representative of a difficult type to locate, especially at or approaching a Choice Mint State assignment. Highly detailed and featuring many aspects of the Battle of Nieuport, including the besiegement of Fort St. Andrew and the skirmishes in the dunes, all enveloped in a champagne aura with not a hint of weakness. The sole example certified at NGC and desirable as such.

Cementing further upon the Armada's celebrated destruction in 1588, the English and Dutch hoped their signal victory of Nieuport would incapacitate the Spanish for a long time. The victory augmented the prestige of Prince Maurice while Elizabeth's one-time favorite the Earl of Leicester went into eclipse, his lordly conduct toward the Dutch was met suspiciously by rival English courtiers.
